    Hawthorn species are native to North America.  All hawthorns have alternate, toothed, incised or lobed leaves.  They bear clusters of showy white, pink or red flowers from May to June.  Apple-like fruits are 0.3-0.8 inches in diameter, usually red or orange, late in summer. The trunks and branches are smooth and greenish-brown.  Height ranges from 20-40 feet.  The fruits of this species make excellent jelly.
